Mount Pleasant Rd Brewers launched their first beer in July 2021. The brand is the work of Tim Dean & Mark Bruce, who are brothers in law. It doesn’t seem right, but I think they might be the first set of brother in laws we’ve profiled on Year of the Local… I’m sure someone will correct me on that if I’m wrong.

The boys are married to sisters and live only hundreds of metres apart – their brand is named after the road that connects their respective houses. Long term craft appreciators, they only got into homebrewing at the start of 2019. Both Tim & Mark fell in love with the process & loved sharing their creations with friends & family. Such was the feedback that they decided to give commercial brewing a crack. This lead them down the road to Bells Beach Brewery in Torquay where Mount Pleasant Rd Brewers could begin gypsy brewing.

Their first release, Tropical Eclipse Pale Ale – affectionately known at TEPA, was the culmination of those years of refinement in their respective sheds & was canned on July 20th, 2021. Speaking of their cans; I always talk about the importance of branding to these contract/gypsy brewers without a home; and Mount Pleasant Rd have nailed it with their striking 70’s inspired cans.

Coincidentally; the day before I contacted them The Geelong Advertiser broke some news they were hoping to keep quiet a little while longer. Mount Pleasant Road Brewers have passed the first stage of council planning to open a small taproom on, you guessed it, Mount Pleasant Road, Belmont.

Assuming it gets through advertising, you should be able to enjoy a Mount Pleasant Road beer at their own bar in the not too distant future. The boys are hoping the taproom may lead to having their own brewery in Geelong down the track. But for now they are happy to continue gypsy brewing at Bells Beach Brewery while the business continues to grow.

Now all the marketing in the world is useless if the beer isn’t good. I’ve sampled a few of their offerings now and have decided to write about TEPA; their core range Pale Ale that they spent 2 years perfecting. Thankfully it’s delightful & a really good expression of the Eclipse hop, with lots of bitter citrus on top of a nice biscuity malt base. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes out for more releases from Mt Pleasant Rd Brewers in the future – they have a Raspberry Wheat Ale which I know many of you will be interested in!

Remember it’s always Beer O’Clock somewhere in the world!
